Even though many a fanboy have tried to crack the shell surrounding JJ Abrams' second adventure with the crew of the Enterprise plenty of mystery remains for Star Trek Into Darkness. That's a great thing as far as we're concerned. Oh, we love to speculate about the film, about who is playing who and what alien races will be popping up, but at the end of the day it's all in the spirit of wanting to imagine all the ways Abrams and company will be putting a smile on our faces come May 17, 2013. Having said that, the new trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness definitely shows a whole lot more about the film. Don't worry, it doesn't reveal who Benedict Cumberbatch is specifically playing just yet, but it does set him up as a colossal, federation-destroying...

Cine Latino covers, well, all things relating to Latino culture and the movies, every Wednesday. Viggo Mortensen returns to the big screen this week, causing double the trouble playing twins in his fourth Spanish language film, Todos Tenemos Un Plan (Everybody Has a Plan). Directed by first-time film director Ana Piterbarg, the story follows twin brothers—one a  poverty-stricken thug, the other a doctor--who embark in a desperate quest for a second chance. I chatted with Mortensen about who he would pick as his real-life twin brother, what it was like to revisit Argentina where he grew up, and his upcoming film The Two Faces of January. Movies.com: You're known for being so selective with the roles you take on. What turned you on to this project— the...

What's the Greatest Opening Scene of a Movie Ever?

The first scene of a movie is crucial. It's our first impression, the part that should draw us in enough to keep us watching the rest. And yet it shouldn't be so phenomenal that it's all downhill from there. Of course, when considering the best openings of all time we are likely to include a few that not only stand out but also stand apart. Take, for example, the start of Brian De Palma's Snake Eyes, which has the honor of also kicking off Film.com's thorough list of The 50 Best Opening Scenes of All Time. Not to spoil the ending, but the site's number one is 8 1/2, which I'll agree with. It's such a favorite of mine that in film school I kept reworking it as the opening to my own scripts. This was before I knew about Stardust...

How a 'Goosebumps' Movie Could Create a New Generation of Horror Fans

There's no denying it: I wouldn't be a horror fan today if not for R.L. Stine's Goosebumps books. Before I could talk about Dario Argento during post-movie discussions, before I discovered the work of John Carpenter on VHS at my local Blockbuster and before my Saturday mornings were spent devouring the Universal monster movies, there was my big stack of Goosebumps books, each of them practically in tatters from being subjected to so much reading and rereading. In that stack were stories of zombies, mutants, living puppets, disembodied hands with a life of their own and cursed sponges. In that stack was a rudimentary horror education. Now, I'm not going to sit here and tell you that the Goosebumps books are long-lost classics worth of...

'Stoker' and 'Oldboy' Director Park Chan-Wook Shot This Short Film on an iPhone 4

We’re digging in the crates today for a cool short film from Oldboy director Park Chan-wook and his brother Park Chan-kyong that highlights the power (and limitations) of the iPhone as a filmmaking device. Film School Rejects author Scott Beggs shared Night Fishing in his awesome Short Film of the Day series, and we figured it was worth sharing with you guys since most of you probably haven’t seen it. While the Parks were high on the idea of the iPhone being an affordable tool for aspiring filmmakers looking to shoot their projects on the cheap, the reality is that Night Fishing would have been more impressive if they’d shot it with a real camera. Oh, there’s much to admire in the film, which blends horror and drama in a way that only the Koreans seem to...

If you want to show your stripes as a movie villain, what bigger target can you choose than the President of the United States? Regardless of which actor is in office, we're talking about not only the most powerful person in the world but also the most guarded. Killing a movie President takes diligence, brains, patience, and tons of luck, which is why so few ever succeed. Here are just ten examples why it's even harder than it already looks to kill a movie President.

Magic is certainly in the air in theaters everywhere right now, with Oz and Burt Wonderstone making up two of the top three movies domestically. But on May 31, a different kind of magical movie will be arriving in theaters and we've got the new poster for Now You See Me. The film follows FBI agents as they track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money they've stolen. It pains us to bring you this fun bit of trivia because for whatever reason video of this event was never aired and is not online, though there are images that prove its existence and two of its stars are in a movie that comes out this weekend called Admission, which makes this all the more topical. Those stars would be Tina Fey and Paul Rudd, who first met back in 2004 while taping a lost (but insanely awesome-sounding) VH1 show called Soundtracks Live, based on the UCB Theatre show where a group of up-and-comers reenact popular movies with live music.  Rudd and Fey were both in the reenactment of Sixteen Candles, and there were also shows for Pretty in Pink and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The assortment of names featured in this thing is pretty astounding -- keeping...

This spring Michael Bay steps behind the camera for a fourth time to direct a Transformers movie, promising this next installment will introduce an entirely new story that doesn't feature any of the original trilogy's main human characters (save for a potential cameo that connects it to its predecessors). We know Mark Wahlberg has signed on to star alongside Jack Reynor, and that the film will hit theaters on June 27, 2014. Now word comes from the Michigan Film Office that Transformers 4 has been approved for a film incentive that saves them money, but you don't really care about that stuff because along with this news comes word of a new plot synopsis that gives us an idea of where they're heading this time around. "As humanity picks up the pieces, following...

In December, artist and filmmaker Brian Butler performed Aleister Crowley’s Bartzabel Working ritual for the L&M Arts gallery space in Venice Beach, California. Naturally, because he's not already busy enough, James Franco participated in the ceremony/art performance. The occult collaboration continued with experimental filmmaking icon Kenneth Anger on a video for James Franco and Tim O'Keefe's band Daddy. Producer Ted James remixed "Love in the Old Days," which features Anger as a "Priest of Darkness," presiding over a masked ceremony based on Anton LaVey’s Das Tierdrama ritual — inspired by The Island of Doctor Moreau. Butler joined them in the Franco-directed video and also served as the creative director. Franco may join...

Attention all Clockwork Orange and Stanley Kubrick nerds: watch Florian Frerichs' Alex, a short film tribute to Kubrick's ultraviolence epic. Klaus Kinski's son, Nikolai Kinski, stars as a young man who embodies Malcolm McDowell's Alex after a futuristic city is crushed by a wave of violence. The uprising is sparked by a bloody war between the city's youth and the ruling class after Kinski's character stumbles across a "partial copy" of Kubrick's famous film. The droogs are reborn. The film will be released "Europewide" next January, but as Bleeding Cool states, there could be some legal barriers. We also have to wonder what Kubrick would make of the video. Feel free to interpret the short 50 ways till sundown, because...

We love Pixar movies, and we love video games, so this press release announcing the formation of Steel Wool Games might be the greatest thing since someone got their chocolate stuck in someone else’s peanut butter. Five artists from the vaunted animation studio have decided their lives weren’t quite busy enough and have formed Steel Wool Games, a new development team working in collaboration with publisher Ripstone. Founded by Sequoia Blankenship, Andrew Dayton, Jonathan Hoffman, Joshua Qualtieri, and Jason Topolski, Steel Wool is looking to bring the lush visuals of your standard Pixar feature to a gaming platform near you. Their first project, entitled Flyhunter, is due out later this year. We’re not sure what, exactly, the game is about at this point...

Rarely do we get to write about Batman on this site (ahem), so while we prepare to spend a great deal of time waiting for the next Batman franchise to arrive on the big screen, we may as well reminisce about what once was by taking a look back at the villains of the previous two live-action Batman franchises. The one truly entertaining aspect of all the Batman movies directed by Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher and Christopher Nolan are the villains. Sure, they definitely upped the camp factor for those Schumacher vehicles, but we really can't envision a world in which Arnold Schwarzenegger's version of Mr. Freeze doesn't exist. Can you? We didn't think so. Thanks to the Rafa Toro tumblr for creating these fantastic animated GIFs featuring the villains of those two...

"I've got an idea for a very low budget going back to, not micro-budget, but a Never Let Me Go level budget, sci-fi movie that's a hard film. It's going to be a difficult film. I sort of alternate between these adrenaline-ized movies and these reflective movies. So Never Let Me Go, Sunshine, reflective; then psycho with Dredd, 28 Days, as it were. And this is more in the Sunshine mode than the Never Let Me Go mode. It's that kind of movie." That's what screenwriter, producer, and all-around badass Alex Garland (when it comes to making sci-fi movies, at least) told us at Fantastic Fest when we asked about his next film. At the time he didn't have a name for it, but now we know it's called...

UPDATE: The following Ant-Man test footage was screened yesterday for an event in London, and naturally the internet is all up in arms about it ... again. Since whatever leaked video was floating around has since been pulled, this is your best opportunity to see what that footage looks like. Hopefully Marvel satisfies fans by turning this footage into a trailer to play before Iron Man 3 in May. We also wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of Thor: The Dark World trailer screen then either.  Those who managed to get into Marvel's Comic-Con panel in San Diego this year were not only treated to Iron Man 3 footage, but we also got to see a very cool test reel that Edgar Wright put together for Ant-Man. While Marvel works behind the scenes to figure out when Wright will...

March Madness is here, and let's face it: if you're pumped for a solid month of NCAA ball, you’re probably a dude. And if you’re a woman who loves a super-fan, it’s going to be a lonely month. The problem: you don’t mind watching hot guys in jerseys, but you hate watching the actual games. The solution: sports movies. You will see hot guys playing sports and learn nothing about the games. Is this objectification? Probably. For the women who love the player but hate the game, here are 8 sexy sports movies.

The most important thing to understand about Spring Breakers is that it’s exactly what it is, and it’s also a lot more. Unquestionably, it’s a leering, hedonistic celebration of teenagers objectifying and dehumanizing themselves in the name of adolescent, boundary-testing rebellion. But it’s also, in both form and content, an objective portrait of the way that popular culture has virtually obliterated the possibility for American youth to experience something without a numbing deluge of media references and contexts, and therefore with any impulse at all to take responsibility for themselves, much less acknowledge that there are repercussions at all. All of which is why Spring Breakers will make you hate teenagers, but understand them as well. On a purely...

We all know the best worst movie is Troll 2, but what about the actual worst movie? Actor-director Glenn Berggoetz created that film, and even named it The Worst Movie Ever!. The film isn't remembered for its fine acting, breathtaking visuals, or intense storyline. Instead, it's best known for selling a single $11 ticket during its opening weekend at a theater in Los Angeles. Since its debut in November 2012, the movie has earned $10,194. Berggoetz has a new film coming out, and Movieline has all the details. Midget Zombie Takeover, which has an absurd trailer that features a lot of screaming, has already performed better than the director's previous film. According to Box Office Mojo, Midget Zombie Takeover has earned $2,755 — $755 more than its...

We've seen film fans recut various movie trailers set to different music — like the one we wrote about from mash-up artist ChugsTheMonkey who set Stanley Kubrick's 2001 to music fit for an action-packed blockbuster. The score for a movie trailer can enhance the tone of a film — and sometimes it can feel totally wrong — but who are the people that make the music, and how do they feel about it all? Yoav Goren is a composer and the co-owner of a music production company called Immediate Music. His first gig was composing the score for Brian De Palma's Carlito's Way trailer. Before that he was a musician, playing keyboards for several bands. This 12-minute clip from the SoundWorks Collection, which we spotted on Slash Film, reveals the...

Seriously, unless you want to start watching Despicable Me on a loop once again, don't show your kids this trailer. Despicable Me was one of the surprise hits of 2010. Sure, animated kids movies tend to always do well, but those also tend to come from established studios like Disney, Pixar or DreamWorks. Despicable Me was the first film from Illumination Entertainment, a company founded by ex-20th Century Fox Animation president Chris Meledandri, and it was a big enough hit ($540 million across the globe) that the fledgling studio was able to forge an exclusive financing and distribution deal with Universal. The pair went on to make Hop and The Lorax, but now they're going back to the super villain comedy well for both Despicable Me 2 (July 3, 2013) and its spin-off...

What if during an intense battle you had the option of utilizing any weapon from your favorite sci-fi or fantasy movies? Would you choose a lightsaber (Star Wars), a proton pack (Ghostbusters), Thor's hammer, Harry Potter's wand, Wolverine's claws or something completely different? In this amusing fan-made video, the dudes from Sneaky Zebra stage a backyard battle in which they attempt to off each other by using a number of classic movie weapons and the best digital effects that not a whole ton of money can buy.  Will this video once and for all determine the greatest fictional movie weapon of all time, or will we walk away simply wanting a bit more blood and guts in their inevitable sequel? Check it out below, and let us know which weapon you'd use in a...

Welcome back to the Geek Beat! With all of the excitement surrounding the rumors involving Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale being involved in a possible Justice League project, the level of excitement seems really high surrounding a possible film featuring the "World's Greatest Heroes." At first glance this might look like a reactionary move to the success of The Avengers on the part of Warner Bros., but if the studio had its way almost six years ago then it would have had a Justice League film out several years earlier than Marvel Studios' massively successful team-up effort. So, for this week we'll be taking a look back at the almost-made Warner Bros. film that we know today as Justice League: Mortal. While no official...

If a picture is truly worth a thousand words, this article is going to be a long one. We’ve got the latest stills from The Wolverine, Man of Steel, and Pacific Rim for your perusal today. We get things started with this gruesome image from Guillermo Del Toro’s giant monsters vs. giant robots movie, Pacific Rim. This photo turned up online this morning with the cryptic caption “This is as close as you ever want to get to Kaiju blood.” Why yes, yes it is – because we find blood kinda gross and don’t generally go out of our way to be near it in the first place. This is why we disappointed our mothers and avoided going to med school. The blood in question clearly comes from the film’s Kaiju, which are the giant monsters Charlie Hunnam and...

As we continue to plow toward a number of new Star Wars movies, including spin-offs and an entire trilogy of sequels that pick up after Return of the Jedi, now might be a good time to refresh yourself with the Star Wars mythology and all the characters who've been major players in the franchise up until this point. UK-based graphic designer Joe Stone created this all-encompassing Star Wars Family Tree that definitely comes off as cluttered and confusing, but there's a method to Stone's madness, with each line representing a different kind of Star Wars relationship, be it a friendship, romance, offspring, etc. You can use the guide in the upper right-hand corner to help as you browse through characters that seem to come from both film franchises, as well as The Clone Wars...

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.: One franchise based on a '60s spy-based TV series isn't enough for Tom Cruise, who is reportedly in early talks to star in a new movie version of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which previously spun off films directly related to the show. Guy Ritchie is directing this adaptation/remake, which previously involved Steven Soderbergh and star George Clooney. Robert Vaughn starred in the originals, and here's hoping they bring him back as the villain, something along the lines of his Superman III role. [Deadline] The Count of Monte Cristo: 'Dark Knight' trilogy co-writer David S. Goyer will direct a new adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas revenge novel The Count of Monte Cristo, which has been penned by Michael Robert Johnson. Reportedly the project...

Top 10 Movies Discovered at SXSW 2013

The real beauty of film festivals is not the films you go in excited to see -- it's the films you're happy you saw when the whole thing is over. When the 2013 SXSW Film Festival began, the buzz was all about the world premiere of the Evil Dead remake and an already infamous screening of Spring Breakers, but now that the dust has settled smaller films have emerged and captured the attention of the film world. These are not necessarily the 10 best films to screen at this year's SXSW, but they are 10 films that went into the festival without overwhelming buzz and left as favorites. These are movies that either premiered at SXSW or first made a true splash at this fest (so no You're Next or Much Ado About Nothing), a combination of award winners and personal...

'Escape from New York' Redo to Be a Trilogy. What Other Movie Would Be Better As Three Movies?

I try to give Hollywood the benefit of the doubt when it comes to its lack of originality. Remakes and reboots might be sourced back for an easy concept, but following through on the idea isn't always so simple. Modernizing, reworking and reimagining plot details is one way to inject a fresh take on old material, for instance. And in some ways restarting a franchise with sequels in mind entails some recycling but also requires new ideas to go forward with. But now, with announcement of plans to stretch an Escape from New York rehash over three movies, it's clear the only new thing producers have in mind is a way out of thinking of anything novel at all. We should have seen this coming. With successful series like Harry Potter and Twilight having extended finales and The...

What if Movies Replaced Guns with a Thumbs-up?

With some of the focus of our current social and political climate being directed at gun laws and the needless gun deaths across America, website Thumbs and Ammo couldn't have arrived at a better time. The single-serving blog states: "Real tough guys don't need guns, they just need a positive, can-do attitude." Movie icons like Robert De Niro's Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, Sylvester Stallone's Rambo, and James Bond are known for their propensity to solve problems with firearms (or fists). Enter Thumbs and Ammo, which replaces the guns in photos of the brazen characters with a goofy thumbs up. It's a simple, but hilarious swap that reminds you just how many weapons we see in a film like Pulp Fiction or Terminator per frame (hint: a...

How to Get Into College, According to the Movies

In this week’s Admission, Tina Fey, admissions officer, is fond of telling prospective applicants that there is no “secret” to gaining admittance to an Ivy League school like Princeton, where 99% of the applicants are rejected; they simply must do their best. But she’s tempted to bend the rules for an underachiever when old flame Paul Rudd tells her that the kid may be the son she gave up for adoption. Contrary to what Ms. Fey tells would-be applicants, however, many other movies have been more than happy to expose their “secrets.” Here are 10 ways to get into college, according to the movies.

Watch: Our John Gholson Visits VH1 to Talk the Big Movies at SXSW in 2013

After all was said and done, after James Franco had successfully corrupted Selena Gomez in Springbreakers, after all pants were sufficiently soaked with fear after the Evil Dead premiere, my SXSW came to a close with an invitation to appear on VH1's Big Morning Buzz with host Carrie Keagan.   We talked about as many of the films as we could in such a quick segment, and her first question really did make me consider what makes SXSW different from any other film fest. I live in Austin, Texas, and I happen to think (as do others) that it's a very accommodating city. There's really a mix of people from all walks of life, with differing politics, tastes, and styles, and the thing about this city is that everyone is welcome. The tastes of the fest reveal this...

What Movie Bloopers Looked Like in the 1930s

Actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood always seem so sharp-tongued, composed, and effortlessly cool. It's hard to imagine any of cinema's greatest stars, like Gary Cooper or Jean Harlow, tripping over their lines and screwing up a scene during shooting. The Film Archive recently shared a video that reveals the bloopers or "breakdowns" of the 1930s, which proves that the polish and sophistication sometimes gave way to mistakes. The video defines the gag reel as follows: "A breakdown — when one or more people get 'tetched in the head' at a most opportune time — causing the director, the assistant director, the unit manager, the producer, etc., to lose their mental balance and their digestive organs fail to...

Watch: Insane Russian Music Video Takes you Inside the Mind of a Killer Secret Agent

Make a music video for a song called "Bad Motherf**ker" and you're just setting expectations high. Thankfully the mad Russians behind this video for the band Biting Elbows exceed those expectations. Like parkour? Like your action movies violent and fast-paced? Like a first person perspective? This video checks all three boxes, and even a few surprise ones at the end. The acting might be a little stiff, but the stunt work isn't. Not in the slightest. "Bad Motherf**ker" is packed with insane stunt work. Sure, the blood may be digital, but the roof-running, building-scaling, car-jumping feats are all real, and they're all awesome. These FPS videos are a bit of a trend these days, so how long do you think it'll be before Hollywood takes notice...

How SXSW 2013 Helped Define the "Austin Movie"

Sometimes, a location stops being a setting and starts being a character. You see this happen to New York City in the films of Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese, and you see it happen to Los Angeles in the films of Paul Thomas Anderson and Robert Altman, to give you just two examples. The nature of those cities can be seen and (metaphorically) smelled and felt in every frame of movies like Manhattan and Magnolia, Short Cuts and Taxi Driver. After watching a "New York movie" or an "L.A. Movie," audiences can actually feel like they've been to those cities. So what does an "Austin movie" feel like? Attending the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas gives you a great chance to see the city's quickly growing independent film community in action...
